Overview

The Bodum Chambord is the canonical French press. Designed in the 1950s and updated to its current form in 1974, it remains the reference design — chrome frame, borosilicate carafe, stainless mesh filter. Most cheaper French presses on the market are direct visual derivatives.

For multi-cup households who don’t want pour-over fuss, the Chambord works. Coarse grind, hot water, 4 minutes of steep, plunge, pour. Cup body is heavier than paper-filtered coffee because the mesh allows oils and very fine sediment through — for users who like that mouthfeel, the French press is the brewer of choice.

The glass carafe is the long-term weakness. Replacement glass costs nearly as much as a complete unit, and the glass itself is fragile relative to ceramic or stainless alternatives. For travel or heavy-use contexts, the insulated Espro P7 or Bodum Travel Press handle the wear better. For home use on a stable counter, the Chambord at $40 is the standard.
